The JOY of Adopting a Senior or Special Needs Pug
Are you looking to add a happy, low
maintenance companion (who may even know a few
entertaining tricks) to your family?
If so, READ ON!!!
Pugs who are eight years old or older are generally
classified as seniors but don’t let that label scare
you! Most nine or ten year olds are middle aged…that
great age where they are mellow yet playful- but not
craaaazy like a puppy. Remember that pugs can
live to be anywhere from 12-16 years old. They
may begin to slow down a bit, but that is not always
the case. Special needs can range from vision,
hearing and mobility impairment to medical
conditions requiring medication. Sometimes it
is not advisable to put a senior or special needs
Pug in a family with children under the age of ten,
but there are exceptions - Such as a much loved
senior pug who has been relinquished by a family and
has always been around children. These dogs have so
much more love to give to families, and often
blossom once again when placed with another pug
companion or a family with children. Remember these
angels’ only purpose in life is to be someone’s
companion. Without it they often show signs of
depression. So for those of you, who are thinking
that the only Pug who will fit into your family is
the younger one, please think again about these
older, special pugs. Talk to the PPRA volunteer you
are working with. They will be able to advise you as
to what special needs or senior dogs might be
appropriate placements for your family. PPRA will
not place a Pug in the wrong type of home, so you
should feel secure in their advice as no one ever
wants to re-home a Pug once it is placed.
You say you work all day?? Not a problem, some
senior and special needs Pugs love to nap all day
and are overjoyed at the arrival of their owners at
the end of the workday. There is nothing better to
wipe away the stresses of the day than to be met at
the door by an wiggling, snuffling, wagging Pug!
